FAQ
Every question we get asked, including the awkward ones.
If something you need is not here, ask us directly and we will add it.
The obvious question
Is the website really free?
If your site takes orders, yes, and it is more than free: nothing is deducted from your sales either. There is no setup fee, no deposit and no monthly hosting bill. We design, build, host and maintain the site at our own cost, and make our money from a $0.99 + 2% application fee your customer pays at checkout.
So what is the catch?
The honest answer is that there is a condition rather than a catch: we only accept projects we believe will generate sales, because that is the only way we get paid. If we do not think a project will sell, we say no. We would rather turn work down than build something that earns neither of us anything.
What if I never make a single sale?
Then we never earn anything, and you still owe us nothing. There is no minimum charge, no dormancy fee and no invoice at the end of a quiet year. We take that risk knowingly, and it is why we care so much about whether the site actually converts.
What if my business does not sell anything online?
Then the free model cannot apply, because there would be no orders for us to earn a fee on. Those sites are conventional paid work: a one-time build price, or the same build spread over monthly instalments with nothing to pay upfront. Hosting and maintenance are included either way. We would rather charge openly than invent a hidden cost.
Why would you give away work for free?
Because a client who sells for years is worth far more than a one-off build fee. A traditional agency is paid once and moves on. We are tied to your results for as long as you are with us, which is a better deal for us and a much safer one for you.
The fee
Who actually pays the fee?
Your customer does. The fee is included in the price your buyers see from the very first page, and itemised at checkout like a booking fee. A $100 ticket is advertised and sold at $102.99, and the full $100 is routed to your account through Stripe Connect. Nothing is deducted from your payout. Showing the all-in price up front is not a style choice: UK and EU consumer law, and US rules for event tickets, require it.
How much is it?
$0.99 plus 2% of the order value. The 99 cents is charged once per order, not per item, so an order containing four tickets carries one 99 cent charge rather than four. Your exact terms are confirmed in writing before your site goes live and never change without your written agreement.
So the website really costs me nothing at all?
On the default arrangement, yes. No build fee, no hosting bill, and nothing deducted from your sales. Our income comes entirely from the fee your buyers pay at checkout. That is the whole business model, and it is why we only take on sites we believe will sell.
What if I would rather my customers did not see a fee?
Then absorb it. You advertise the clean price, your buyer pays exactly what is on the ticket, and you settle the accumulated fees with us weekly or every two weeks. Plenty of clients prefer this for premium events where a fee line feels wrong.
What about free tickets?
Free is free. A zero-value order carries no application fee at all, for you or for your guest. Giveaways, guest lists and complimentary entry cost nothing to run through us.
Is the fee on top of Stripe's own charges?
Stripe takes its own processing charge, which goes to Stripe rather than to us. Our fee is separate and appears as its own line, so the two are never confused. Both are visible in your dashboard against every order.
What happens if an order is refunded?
The fee is reversed along with the order, the flat 99 cents included. Where your buyer paid the fee, it is returned to them as part of the refund. Nobody is left holding a charge for a sale that did not stand.
How do I know you are charging the right amount?
Every order appears in your dashboard with its face value, the fee added, what Stripe took and what was routed to you. You can check any figure yourself, at any time, and export the lot. Asking you to trust a total with no working shown would be a bad way to run this business.
Do you work in currencies other than US dollars?
We price in US dollars today. Multi-currency support is planned, and if you sell in another currency tell us during the application and we will be straight with you about whether we can settle reliably in your market yet.
Paying for a non-selling site
How much does a paid site cost?
It depends on how big the job is, and we publish the bands rather than one number: roughly $349 to $749 for a small site, $799 to $1,899 for most business sites, and from $1,999 for large or bespoke work. The estimator on the pricing page shows where you would land, and we agree a fixed price before any work starts.
Why not just publish one price?
Because a five-page site and a forty-page site are not the same job. One flat figure means the small client subsidises the large one, and the large one gets less work than they paid for. Ranges are less tidy and more honest.
What if your estimate is over my budget?
Tell us the number you actually have. We will tell you what fits inside it, which often means launching smaller and growing later, or spreading the cost further. If it genuinely does not work we will say so rather than take the job and cut corners.
What are the two ways to pay?
Once, which covers the build plus the first year of hosting, after which a small monthly fee keeps the site online. Or in instalments over 3, 6 or 12 months with nothing upfront and no interest, where hosting and maintenance stay included throughout.
Why is there a monthly cost at all?
Hosting, SSL certificates, backups, security patching and support are genuine recurring costs to us. On our order-based sites the transaction fee covers them. Without orders, something has to, and quietly absorbing it would just mean quietly dropping the maintenance instead.
Is the instalment plan a loan?
No. It is a payment plan for our own services, with no interest and no third-party lender. You are paying us monthly for a site we are also hosting and maintaining for you.
What happens at the end of the instalment term?
The build is paid off. You continue on hosting and maintenance only, at the lower monthly rate, or you take the site elsewhere with our help and stop paying us entirely.
Can I stop an instalment plan early?
Yes, on 30 days notice. The rest of the build price then falls due in one payment, and once it is paid the site is yours to keep with us or take elsewhere. If you cancel before launch, you pay only for the work done so far.
Can I switch to the free model later?
Yes. If you add a shop, a booking system or ticketing and it starts producing orders, we move you onto the order-based arrangement and stop the monthly charge.
Selling more, and what you get for it
What do I get for selling well?
Two things, both earned rather than sold. Pass the first sales threshold and we take over your social media at no extra cost. Pass the top threshold and we build, publish and maintain native Android and iOS apps for you, also free. Both figures are published on the pricing page.
Are the apps really free?
At the top sales tier, yes, including publishing to both stores and keeping them updated. Below that tier, apps are a conventional paid project and we will quote for them.
Who owns the app store listings?
You do. The Google Play and App Store accounts are registered in your name, so the listings, reviews and users are yours. We publish and maintain on your behalf.
What if my sales drop below a threshold afterwards?
We give notice rather than stopping mid-campaign, and agree either a wind-down or a paid continuation with you first. Apps already published are never pulled from the stores without your written instruction.
Ownership and leaving
What exactly do I own?
Your domain, registered in your name from day one. Your brand. Every piece of content you supplied. And all of your customer and order data, exportable in a standard format whenever you ask. Those are yours outright and we will never hold them hostage.
Do I own the website itself?
No, and we would rather say so plainly than let you find out later. The design and code we build remain our copyright and stay on our hosting, in the same way you would not own the software behind a hosted shop platform. What you are getting free is the use of a site we built and continue to run, not a transfer of the asset.
So what happens if I leave?
You take your domain, your content and a full export of your customers and orders, and you point that domain at whatever you build next. What you cannot take is our build. That is a real cost of leaving and we would rather you weighed it going in than felt tricked on the way out.
Is that not just lock-in?
It is a form of it, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What we can promise is that the parts that make leaving possible are unconditional: no exit fee, no notice penalty, no charge to release your data, and no argument about whose customer list it is. If you want a site you own outright, ask us for a paid custom build instead and you will own the code.
Can I leave whenever I want?
Yes, on 30 days notice, with no exit fee and no penalty of any kind. Hosting continues for 30 days after you give notice so you are never left without a site while you migrate.
What happens to my site if Owlyn Tech closes?
Your agreement includes a wind-down clause: at least 60 days notice, all funds held on your behalf remitted before anything else, a full data export and help moving your domain. It is an uncomfortable question to publish an answer to, which is exactly why we publish one.
Is there a contract?
There is a written agreement, which exists to protect both sides, but there is no minimum term. You can read the standard terms before you apply.
Building and running the site
How long does it take?
Most sites go live in two to four weeks from the point we have your content. Ticketing and store builds sit at the longer end because payment setup and testing take real time.
Can I ask for changes after launch?
Yes. Content edits, new pages, seasonal campaigns and product updates are included for as long as you are with us. There is no hourly rate waiting to catch you out.
Who writes the content?
You know your business better than we do, so you supply the raw material. We will shape it, edit it and write anything that is missing, at no extra cost.
Do you work with businesses outside the United States?
Yes, provided we can settle payments reliably in your market. Get in touch and we will tell you honestly whether it works.
Still not sure?
Send us the question that is actually stopping you. We would rather answer it now than have you find out later.
